The Year 1000. What Life was Like At The Turn of the First Millenium. An Englishman's World.
by Robert Lacy and Danny Danziger. This was a thoroughly enjoyable and informative book. As the title suggests,
the book is set at the turn of the 11th Century, which was when the Anglo-Saxon way of life
was about to come to an end. Viking raids for the previous 100 years, followed by the Norman Conquest in 1066
spelled the end of a way of life.
The authors make a good attempt at putting the social, economic, religious and military situations of the 11th Century into terms that we in the 21st Century can understand. It's hard, however, for 21st Century Americans to understand just how the people of the 11th Century were so tied to the land and to the cycles of the earth. For example, July was the month of the year where starvation was most likely sinces the harvests were still a month off. And that october was the time for war and raids since hoppers were full at that time. I'd recommend this book to all history enthusiasts. It's a fun, informative book that right at 200 pages...so a fairly quick read. |
