The Virgin in the Ice
by Ellis Peters. This is the sixth of the Brother Cadfael mystery series. With the exception being the first
book, A Morbid Taste for Bones, all the books are against the backdrop of the 12th Century
civil war following the death of Henry I (son of William the Conqueror). Henry's nephew, King Stephen, holds
London and the east while Henry's daughter Maud (aka Matilda) holds the south and west. Shrewsbury and
environs are often caught in the middle.
In this story, two children go missing en route to Shrewsbury and Brother Cadfael gets in the middle of the search. Interwoven in this story is the murder of a young woman and the elimination, by the Sheriff and his men at arms, of a band of marauders taking advantage of the King's attention elsewhere.
