To Your Scattered Bodies Go
by Philip Jose Farmer. This is the first book in the "Riverworld" series of sci-fi novels written in the 1970's. I read the series
about 10-12 years ago on the advice of a friend from church. From his description, these books were the "Harry Potter" series of
the early 1970's. That is, people waited in line for the next installment. It's a compelling series of books. I decided to re-read
the first installment on a recent business trip.
The basic story is that all of humanity who ever lived is resurrected along the banks of a river and they re-build society. The main character is Sir Richard Francis Burton, the famous 19th British explorer. If you are unfamiliar with Burton, you'll get many of the details from this book. This first book sets up Burton's quest for understanding the source of the River and reason's for mankind's resurrection. These books are pretty easy reads and entertaining. The author actually puts himself in the story as one of the resurrected humans. I won't tell you which one. |
