| March 2006. The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay. This book was a gift from a friend that sat on my shelf for a long time and I had started several times but got distracted. Once I finally got into the meat of the story, it was a hard book to put down. The story is set in South Africa in the late 1930's to early 1950's. It follows the story of a English boy named Peekay as he encounters the various social frictions (English/Boer, Black/White, etc..) present in South Africa at the time. Throughout the whole book he uses his wits and his natural boxing skills in an attempt to overcome some demons of his past. The author sets up the reader for a climactic and surprizing ending, so don't skip to the end of this book! Let yourself be set-up and enjoy it. Back to reading list |
