October 2006. Mother Theresa, by Katheryn Spink. This book was given to me by a friend to read on a recent extended trip. I found this book hard to put down and also very thought provoking. Mother Theresa's level of trust that God would provide for her as she attended to the world's poorest people was inspiring. And, given the many stories in the book when fundsor whatever else was needed at the tme seemed to just show up, who can argue with that trust? What was most impressive to me was her attention to those who were dieing alone, to m ake sure that their last moments that they felt that someone loved them and cared about them, regardless of their station or religion. There is a quote on page 154 that spoke to me:
"My religion is everything to me, but for every individual according to the grace God has given to that soul...God has his own ways and means to work in the hearts of men and we do not always know how close they are to him, but by their actions we will always know whether they are at his disposal."
Mother Theresa used to hand out prayer cards to the people that gravitated to her wherever she went. Those cards had the following message:
The fruit of silence is prayer The fruit of prayer is faith The fruit of faith is love The fruit of love is service The fruit of service is peace
This is an easy to read book (285 pages) and I'd recommend it to anyone. If you pick it up, be prepared to be challenged. |
