| January 2006 His Excellency. George Washington, by Joseph P. Ellis. This was my second book to listen to rather than read on my daily commutes to and from work. This was a concise potrait of George Washington from his service in the French and Indian War, through his presidency and up to his death in 1799.The author did not go in to great detail about the battles of the Revolutionary War, but did spend a lot of time on the politics of the Republican and Federalist parties that quickly emerged as the two party system we enjoy (?) today. The description of the polarization of our political system due to the Jay Treaty and its ratification sounded very much like the politics of the present day. Partisan politics is just part of our system and really hasn't changed since the beginning of the Republic. Ellis also wrote Founding Brothers, which we read in 2003 in the bookclub. I'd also highly reccomend that book for anyone interested in more than just names and dates in regard to the founding of our nation. Back to reading list |
