Spring Semester 2013
The Story of Christianity
(Volumes 1 and 2)
by Justo L. Gonzalez. These were two of the three textbooks used for the Spring 2013 Church History class at the University of Dallas. The third textbook was
Ministry in the Church by Paul Bernier. Volume 1 (The Early Church to the Dawn of the Reformation) and Volume 2 (The Reformation to the Present Day) are a very good and readable history of Christianity from the point of view of human history and the interaction of the Church with Western European culture and state.
Christianity's expansion from Europe into the New world and Asia is also covered nicely in these volumes. Post-Reformation, the second volume tends to focus more on the development and expansion of Protestant churchs, and recounts the history of the Cathlolic Church during the same period mostly through the lens of papal activities.
These textbooks were excellent sources for the class, and will be good reference books on my shelf going forward.
