Far Bright Star
by Robert Ohmstead. I found this book while stranded for 3 hours at Dallas Love Field waiting for weather
to clear in Houston. The back cover drew me in immediately: 1916, the US Cavalry chasing Pancho Villa after
crossing the border, and the US considering engaging in WW1.
This was a really good book. Most of it takes place in the desert. The story and the characters are very well woven into the harsh environment of the setting. The main character is an experienced cavalry officer who leads a small search expedition that goes very wrong. How he survives and copes with the aftermath constitutes most of the book.
I found this a difficult book to put down, and its a relatively short book (207 pages) so it's a perfect airplane read. I also found this to be a very tight story with well placed historical detail. Good stuff.
