Where Eagles Dare
by Alistair Maclean (272 pages). This book was just great, cover to cover. It's a WWII espionage thriller
with action and plot twists, but it is not so hard to follow that you need to take notes. The basic story
is about a commando unit, 5 Brits and an American, on a mission to rescue an American General in the clutches
of the Gestapo in a high Alpine castle.
A movie was made based on this book in the late 1960's starring Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood. Burton played the role of the team leader, John Smith. The movie was great and was very faithful to the book in almost every detail. Although, I think I liked the character of Major Smith more in the book than the movie, despite Burton's excellent portrayal. And, of course it's hard not to like Clint Eastwood!
I highly recommend both the book and the movie.
