The Cold Dish
(book #1 of the Walt Longmire Mystery Series)
by Craig Johnson. We started watching Longmire on Netflix in the Spring and found that we really liked the characters and the setting. Then we found the series of books on which the A&E/Netflix series was based. The setting is Wyoming in the 1990s so the vistas are really stunning. The protagonist is Sheriff Walt Longmire of the fictional Absaroka County who has been in the job for 24 years. The supporting cast is very good including Henry Standing Bear (owner of the local bar and Walt's best buddy from high school) and Deputy Victoria (Vic) Moretti (loose cannon. From the streets of Philadelphia). The stories are told in first person (Walt's) are are very well written and engaging.
In The Cold Dish, Sheriff Longmire investigates the murder of two young men who, along with two others, were acquitted for the rape of an Indian girl on the Cheyanne reservation. Revenge is suspected and Walt get the the bottom of it with the help of Henry Standing Bear. Along the way the reader is treated to western lore and a good dose of historic firearms.
The Longmire stories have the attractive combination of a good mystery along with the occasional "Come out with your hands up, it's the sheriff" scenario.
