November 2005. 1776, by David McCullough. I listened to this book on CD on a recent trip to Asia and then on my morning and evening commutes on the train. The copy I listened to was the unabridged version read by the author. What a great book.It was interesting to me just how close, and at how many junctures had circumstances been just a little different, the American Revolution would have been stopped in its tracks shortly after the Declaration of Independence was written. McCullough's description of the battle of Brooklyn, and the rest of the NYC campaign by the Howe brothers was very enlightening. McCullough has a way of placing you back in 1776 where the reader feels the anxiety and uncertainty of Washington and the Continental Army.

Here's a link to
David McCullough's website (at Simon and Schuster) that has links historical background and maps. I don't know if the print version has sufficient maps, but get a good map of New York City to accompany your reading of this book.
